Comments from School LRs:

Elizabeth Irwin“Like most teachers I believe we need to commit to our ongoing learning as part of our personal professional development. However, what I was seeing day to day was teachers putting their own needs last. As a Learning Representative I want to give the initiative for professional development back into the hands of colleagues so that they can make their own decision about what they need, and give them the support and information they need to carry this forward. Although it is early days, I am already finding that the contact this gives me with my colleagues is very rewarding.”

Elizabeth Irwin , Lochgelly High School

“I applied for the EIS Learning Representative course as I had benefited so much from the modules for the Chartered Teacher course on-line through the University of Paisley . I came to understand more clearly that successful CPD courses are those that give me experiences that I can apply in the classroom and can modify to improve my own practice. Having attended a course which gave me all that I could wish for in terms of practical application and follow up contact with the provider, the opportunity to share my experience with other colleagues constructively, I undertook the Learning Representative course hoping to discover more such opportunities for myself and for my colleagues.

Brenda Procter, Maxwellton High School , Dumfries

It appears to me that there is a lot of confusion amongst many about the nature and contractual requirements of CPD. Undertaking the school LR course clarified this for me and I came to realise that CPD is a vast and developing territory. Learning Representatives are in an ideal position to be the first point of help for their colleagues, being able to offer friendly and totally confidential advice on CPD. I very much enjoyed participating in the online training modules and found the additional workload quite manageable. I am horrified by the stresses borne by most contemporary teachers and I think it is vital to ease their professional load in any possible way. If pointing a colleague in the direction of easily accessible appropriate CPD is one way in which I can help, then I am glad to do so.
